LEVI

I’m sitting down on the couch, texting the guys to come over tonight as I watch TV with Krissy. Wilson is plopped down in the middle, pawing at Krissy every time she stops petting him.

I text the group.

Me: Please, for the love of God, bring some pizza and junk food. As much as I love Marcia’s cooking, I’ve had nothing but homemade food these past few days.

When I look up from my phone, I see Riley standing by the front door, watching me, but her expression seems off. Her cheeks look flushed. Wilson’s tail is now wagging nonstop, but with Krissy petting him, he doesn’t move.

“Everything okay?” I ask as I put the phone down on the coffee table.

“Yeah. Why?”

Krissy grabs the remote, turns the TV off and looks at Riley. “Because you look like you’ve seen a ghost,” she says.

“Everything is okay,” she stammers. “What are you two doing?”

Krissy chuckles. “Well, Levi here is being sold.”

Riley raises an eyebrow at her.

“Way to make me feel cheap,” I joke.

“OOOHHHH” Krissy laughs. “You’re definitely not cheap. 18k as we speak.”

“You’re kidding!” I say, and Riley just looks back and forth between us. Confused. And I know this isn’t going to win me any points with her. At all. I try to make it sound better than it actually is. “The label is doing a meet and greet auction,” I say as I watch her for a reaction. But at the moment, I can’t read her.

“You do that type of thing all the time, though, don’t you?” She finally asks.

“Sort of,” I say, standing up. I start to move toward her. My gaze fixed on hers. “Would that bother you?”

“Why would it?” She asks. Still standing rooted in the same spot. It’s almost like she is standing there, calculating every move. Every word. “We’re only fake dating. Besides, it’s part of your job, right?” She asks as she bites her bottom lip.

I keep staring at her, and when I close the distance between us, I reach for her and lift her chin. I want her to be looking at me when I say my next words. “What if I don’t want it to be fake?”

She steps back and shies away but there is no hint of a smile. Nothing. And she doesn’t have to tell me this isn’t happening. I can see it in her eyes; in her body language.

I stay put but give her a smile in an attempt to let her know that this is okay. I’m a big boy. I can handle rejection. Shit. That is a lie. I fucking hate this feeling.

My phone ringing saves us from the awkward silence and pity that is undoubtedly coming my way. I turn around and walk over to the coffee table, grabbing my phone.

I can’t help but roll my eyes before I answer it.

“Hey, mom,” I answer in a serious tone, looking at Wilson as I pet him with my other hand.

“LEVI JAMESON!” She yells into my ear. I pull the phone away as I sigh and walk toward Clary’s room.
